{"id":1287,"date":"2016-12-31T20:02:19","date_gmt":"2017-01-01T01:02:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/madameshepard.com\/?p=1287"},"modified":"2018-06-30T10:35:50","modified_gmt":"2018-06-30T14:35:50","slug":"le-gaspillage-alimentaire-a-mini-unit-for-intermediate-low-french-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madameshepard.com\/?p=1287","title":{"rendered":"Le Gaspillage Alimentaire: A Mini-Unit for Intermediate Low French Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1286\" src=\"https:\/\/madameshepard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Treasure_trove_of_wasted_food.jpg?w=221\" alt=\"Treasure_trove_of_wasted_food.JPG\" width=\"221\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/madameshepard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Treasure_trove_of_wasted_food.jpg 4000w, https:\/\/madameshepard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Treasure_trove_of_wasted_food-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/madameshepard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Treasure_trove_of_wasted_food-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/madameshepard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Treasure_trove_of_wasted_food-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/madameshepard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Treasure_trove_of_wasted_food-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the first units that I shared on this blog was a series of lessons on food waste. \u00a0When I found myself with a couple of available weeks with my French 3 students right before Thanksgiving this year, this topic seemed like a great fit. \u00a0Not only would we all be enjoying copious dinners, but the subject of food waste seems has begun to be addressed on American media. \u00a0Click <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1ZHenyLXNpzWRDPRGdA2a9sFSzw2vUq88TYrs9CGFkbA\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(update 6\/30\/18) for the unit agenda, to which all materials have been linked. \u00a0Here\u2019s a short explanation of each lesson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>#1:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As an introduction to the topic, we watched and discussed a video about food waste as a class. The students were then given one of two infographics about food waste and a graphic organizer. The students read their infographic and filled in as much information as possible in the graphic organizer. \u00a0They then discussed their information with their partner (who had read the opposite graphic organizer) and wrote the additional information they gleaned from the conversation in the graphic organizer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>#2:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As a hook to the second lesson we discussed a document with suggestions for avoiding food waste. \u00a0The students then interviewed a partner about his\/her own habits. \u00a0Following this interview, the students wrote a message to their partners with suggestions for reducing the amount of food that they waste. Finally they completed an Edpuzzle for a video about food waste.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>#3: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I began this lesson by showing an anti-food waste announcement that we discussed as a class. \u00a0The students then completed an Edpuzzle for a video in which a character gives recipes using leftovers. \u00a0After completing the Edpuzzle, the students rewatched the video and wrote out the directions for each recipe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>#4: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this 90-minute class period, the students completed 3 different stations related to recipe preparation. \u00a0At the listening station, they completed four different Edpuzzles for videos about food waste. At the reading station, they completed an activity in which they matched pictures from a recipe to the written description of the step shown in the picture. (Due to the nature of this activity, I am not able to share the materials here.) At the third station, the students chose one of the three videos from the previous day\u2019s lesson, and practiced presenting it orally, using only the pictures they were given. \u00a0After about 20 minutes of practice, they recorded themselves giving the recipe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>#5: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This lesson began with a pre-reading discussion of doggy bags, which was following by an interpretive activity based on an infographic about this topic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>#6: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to prepare for the interpersonal task on the IPA, the students participated in a Speed-friending activity by interviewing several classmates about their food waste habits<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and giving suggestions based on their partner\u2019s responses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>#7: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On our next block day the students completed the IPA for this mini-unit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>I was pleasantly surprised at the engagement level of many of my formerly reluctant learners during this mini-unit on a topic with important environmental implications.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the first units that I shared on this blog was a series of lessons on food waste. \u00a0When I found myself with a couple of available weeks with my French 3 students right before Thanksgiving this year, this topic seemed like a great fit. \u00a0Not only would we all be enjoying copious dinners, [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":true,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[14,23],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1287","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-french-3-units","category-integrated-performance-assessments-ipas"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.4 -
