As a Type A over-planner, I also felt uncomfortable spending class time on a song that didn\u2019t relate to the thematic lesson objectives I had established. Of course, I did realize that music could be a great way to engage my students, especially after participating in #maniemusicale last year (Thanks <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mmefarab.wordpress.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@MmeFarab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!) As a result, one of my goals for this year has been to work with one song a week this year. \u00a0Because I have one long block each week (a 90-minute, rather than 48-minute class period), working with a song seemed a great way to provide a brain break from the more communicative activities that we spend most of our time on. \u00a0Our 15-minute song activity, along with a 15 minutes of \u201cLecture Libre,\u201d helps to keep these students engaged and motivated during these longer days. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although I\u2019m hoping to come up with some more creative ideas in the future, this is the process I\u2019ve used so far:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I pass out a word cloud with the words that the students will later fill in during the cloze activity, along with other words that will not be used. \u00a0With my lower levels, I explain any words that they don\u2019t know.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I play the song once, and the students highlight or circle any words in the word cloud that they heard.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students then check with their work with their table groups.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I then pass out the cloze activity, and play the song again during which time the students fill in the missing words, using the word cloud as a word bank. (Although the majority of the missing words are in the word clouds, a few are missing due to a computer glitch or user error.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I give the students a few minutes to try and fill in those blanks they didn\u2019t fill with words that make sense.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I play the song a third time, stopping after each verse to check comprehension.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have been pleasantly surprised by how well even my French 2 students have done on these tasks, as well as how the students have been able to use the vocabulary they have learned from these songs on tasks related to our current unit of study. \u00a0Even better, many of my students have mentioned playing the songs for their friends and families and looking up other songs by the same artists. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the songs I\u2019ve used so far and links to the materials I created for each one.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=U-Z_bZS8t3M\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sur Ma Route <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Black M<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I was more ambitious on my first song, creating one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1V4-i9eSEzjFENHxvk3E1BYvsKsUmtCIDcpbr2flLlSo\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">word cloud<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for my French 2 and French 3 students (first page) , and a different one for my French 4\/5 classes (second page). \u00a0Likewise, there are separate documents for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1Fb1lGV7Mv8fKFggoo6FuUFbdTPHrEz2-9aNjRzB59hQ\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">French 2\/3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cloze activity and the one I used in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/13zGE59qJVL7m7emLOf8V1Mu0p8WbS6L9B2ykzMxYAh4\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">French \u2158<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which also has a short comprehension section).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=orMxYOnqN5Q\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcher au Soleil<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Tal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I skipped the word cloud with this one, but did create separate cloze activities for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1oMEjyfeId8JqGWKj5mnis7Q8PGq_3XTNvcyqBmBMmCM\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">French 2 and 3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1mR8McBmtHF5XE-vCZ1Vv_wttKhY32HtZC0OZtz1y-vI\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">French 4\/5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KA3Q1duzwaE\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tu vas me manquer <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Maitre Gims<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
