After spending the last 15 years in a building where August meant mostly reconnecting with my former students (only the Freshmen were new to me each year), in a couple of weeks I will welcome about 150 brand-new faces to my classroom. I\u2019d be lying if I said I wasn\u2019t scared to death! As a relatively introverted, somewhat anxious person, the challenge of learning a whole new school culture, finding my way around a humongous new school, and connecting with all of those new students is nearly overwhelming. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While I have pledged to be patient with myself when it comes to finding my way around my school and its policies, getting to know my students simply can\u2019t wait. \u00a0Therefore, I\u2019ll spend the first few days of school on learning activities that will help me learn more about my students, as well as introduce them to the types of communicative activities I\u2019ll be assigning to help them increase their proficiency. \u00a0Here\u2019s what I have in mind for each of the classes I\u2019ll be teaching:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>French 2\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this class the students will be introducing themselves to the class by presenting a self-portrait. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Day 1 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll show the students these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1dXvnKsJpIeSKsQZm-HM4kFB6PUgAmE57Xm0UPpjLVNw\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-portraits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/enseigner.tv5monde.com\/search\/site\/autoportrait\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TV5Monde<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As I project each one, I\u2019ll facilitate class discussion by asking the students questions about what they see, as well as personalized questions using the same vocabulary. \u00a0I\u2019ve prepared this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1ZvGjQNXFD2cMdOSRjoSAgmdP8PF5dRdI-YaQDmbpAsY\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">handout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a reference as I\u2019m not sure whether they will have been introduced to the vocabulary required for these tasks. Next, the students will listen to these descriptions (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/enseigner.tv5monde.com\/sites\/enseigner.tv5monde.com\/files\/asset\/audio\/darius_1-2.mp3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Darius<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/enseigner.tv5monde.com\/sites\/enseigner.tv5monde.com\/files\/asset\/audio\/cheryl_1-2.mp3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cheryl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/enseigner.tv5monde.com\/sites\/enseigner.tv5monde.com\/files\/asset\/audio\/deivan_1-2.mp3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deivan<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/enseigner.tv5monde.com\/sites\/enseigner.tv5monde.com\/files\/asset\/audio\/anastasia_1-2.mp3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastasia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and complete <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1KaLpsViobWbY4l-gY6JaFaIduakd8qi-J1qF0TJAbgc\/edit?usp=sharing\">this<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comprehension guide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (I\u2019ve chosen to provide the students with direct links to the mp3 files rather than the TV5Monde website so that they do not have access to the transcripts.) For homework the students will prepare (and submit electronically) a self-portrait (drawing, painting, phone selfie).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Day 2 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First the students to write out a script for presenting their self-portraits. As they are writing I will circulate and provide feedback. \u00a0Next, the students will present their self-portrait to classmates using inside\/outside circles. Finally the students will compare self-portraits with a partner and complete a Venn diagram with details they discuss. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>French 3\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this class the students will be introducing themselves to the class by presenting 10 things about themselves. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Day 1 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students will work in small groups to read this <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cayla-blog.over-blog.com\/2015\/10\/tag-ma-vie-en-20-questions.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Edit 7\/27\/2019: While this blog is no longer available, a Google search of &#8220;Tag: Ma vie en 20 questions will yield many similar blogs that could be used for this activity.) and complete this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1eDA8ObtPYBy00t6qtLUFOJXw_G6x00Hu7pCD1AlJYbU\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comprehension guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0Then they will answer the same questions in the space provided. \u00a0Finally, they will circulate among their classmates, asking questions in order to find a classmate who has the same answer for each question. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Day 2 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students will listen to this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0Bx_NireJe4FlSzFaNHlPeUVRXzA\/view?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and fill in <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1eVoQqZ7DRLunTdal8ayLSCdwWbZmILbLIVthIf7I094\/edit?usp=sharing\">this <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comprehension guide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I\u2019ll then play the video and facilitate a class discussion by discussing what Benji says and asking personalized questions based on his information. Lastly, the students will write a script for their own &#8220;10 Things&#8221; presentation which will be submitted for feedback before being recorded. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>French 4\/5\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this class the students will be introducing themselves by preparing a presentation on 12 things they have done. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Day 1 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students will listen to this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VQaoY0bbL9A\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and fill in this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/188IL-NDLOq4mbDQRDG2cep04fegr3lQYWdk07iWomIc\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comprehension guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I\u2019ll then play the video and discuss it so that students have feedback on their comprehension. (7\/28\/19: <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1YhEw9MQRSkjUkfkNinGtTeUW3IRjkdJEUlOLD7SAno0\/edit?usp=sharing\">This document<\/a> has a hastily typed up partial key for the activity.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Day 2 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students will read this <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/alybeauty59.blogspot.com\/2013\/04\/tag-n-5-50-choses-que-jai-faites.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and fill in <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1pXV4hHSdIVxavvXOhasOh2h77esDpWZ4_nHmwvl2LIY\/edit?usp=sharing\">this <\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1pXV4hHSdIVxavvXOhasOh2h77esDpWZ4_nHmwvl2LIY\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comprehension guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which they will then discuss in small groups. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Day 3 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students will write a script for their own presentation of 12 things they have done. \u00a0They will then trade papers with a classmate who will fill out this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1H7b6ug2s-sEoqMLZYi-ppQ0PUHsO-8DLY5kKeMCPegU\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feedback form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The students will then revise their scripts, which will be graded according to this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1o39VRPs-CKpBcU9CSS0kAIWIXcDqJBKXnVMTC_2h5qM\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rubric<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For homework the students will record a video of their own presentation and submit it via Schoology.
