{"id":111,"date":"2014-08-23T20:30:52","date_gmt":"2014-08-23T20:30:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/madameshepard.com\/?p=111"},"modified":"2022-11-30T07:02:26","modified_gmt":"2022-11-30T12:02:26","slug":"culture-content-intermediate-unit-education-france","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madameshepard.com\/?p=111","title":{"rendered":"Culture as Content: An Intermediate Unit on Education in France"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When we make the switch from teaching about the language to teaching content by using the language we are able to build a curriculum that focuses on the products, practices and perspectives of our target cultures.\u00a0 For my first French 3 unit of the year, I designed a unit around the French educational system.\u00a0 This topic is a high interest one for the students and also provides important background information for the AP Theme: Contemporary Life.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;d like to see the unit packet, click here:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/madameshepard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Education-Unit1.docx\">Education Unit<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note: The template I use for designing interpretive tasks comes from <em>Implementing Integrated Performance Assessment<\/em> : \u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.actfl.org\/publications\/guidelines-and-manuals\/implementing-integrated-performance-assessment\">http:\/\/www.actfl.org\/publications\/guidelines-and-manuals\/implementing-integrated-performance-assessment<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goal-Setting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since most of the students in this class are currently performing at the Intermediate Low level of proficiency, I chose the following Intermediate Mid ACTFL Can-Do Statements as the goals for this unit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Presentational Writing:<\/strong> I can compose a simple letter, response, or article for publication.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interpersonal Communication:<\/strong> I can talk about my daily activities and personal preferences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Presentational Speaking:<\/strong> 1) I can make a presentation about my personal and social experiences. 2) I can make a presentation on something I have learned or researched.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interpretive Reading:<\/strong> I can understand basic information in ads, announcements, and other simple texts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interpretive Listening:<\/strong> I can understand a short YouTube clip.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lesson I<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Interpretive Task #1:<\/strong> Students will read a diagram and short article explaining the organization of the French educational system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interpretive Task #2:<\/strong> Students will listen to a cartoon video in which French students discuss their school experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Although these texts are not authentic (they were published for French language learners), they were published by members of the target culture and the cartoon does feature a native speaker.\u00a0 Because they present important background information about the organization of the French educational system, I chose to include them in the introductory lesson of this unit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interpersonal Task:\u00a0<\/strong> Students will compare the French and American educational systems and complete a Venn diagram.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Presentational Writing:<\/strong> Students write a note to a French foreign exchange student.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Presentational Speaking:<\/strong> Students address an audience of future exchange students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lesson II<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Interpretive Task:<\/strong> Students read an authentic news article about a French middle school which has done away with numerical grades.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interpersonal Task<\/strong>: Students discuss statements about the role that grades play.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Presentational Writing:<\/strong> Students write a letter to the principal requesting a change in the school\u2019s grading system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Presentational Speaking:<\/strong> Students prepare a presentation to the principal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lesson III<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Interpretive Task<\/strong>: Students read a pair of infographics about changes to the French school schedule. .<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interpersonal Task: <\/strong>Students discuss opinion statements about the length of the school day\/year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Presentational Writing:<\/strong> Students write an e-mail expressing their opinion of the American vs. French school day\/year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Presentational Speaking:<\/strong> Students prepare a presentation about the American vs. French school schedule.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lesson IV<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Interpretive\/Interpersonal Task:<\/strong> Students read and discuss an infographic about school dropouts in France.<\/p>\n<p>Role Play: Students prepare a role play between a student who wants to drop out and his\/her parent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. I have included a set of school-related \u201cToto\u201d jokes for this unit.\u00a0 I have the students read\/translate (!) these jokes as an enrichment activity if they have time left after completing the communicative task that has been assigned.<\/p>\n<p>2.
